New Mexico News Port policies

About us:

We are a public service for the people of New Mexico, a resource for collaboration and experimentation within the local news ecosystem, and a learning vehicle for students at the University of New Mexico. While some of our news is provided by our partners, most of our news is the original work of students who explore issue-oriented beats as an extension of their multimedia journalism degree preparation.

Our standards:

The News Port aims to inform readers through honest, ethical and thorough reporting and accurate writing and photography.

Our independence:

We are first and foremost a news service. That requires editorial independence to seek the truth and report it fully. While we are an extension of the University of New Mexico, we are not an extension of any public relations apparatus.

Corrections policy:

The New Mexico News Port strives to be accurate and fair in all of our reporting. Please notify editor Kate Nash at nmnewsport@gmail.com of any reporting that does not meet those standards. The News Port aims to correct factual errors in a timely manner.

Why some stories are not published:

You may have worked with a student on a story that ultimately was not published. One possible reason for this is that the work didn’t meet our publication standards. In other cases we may use some but not all elements of a story package. In the case of election coverage, we aim to cover both candidates of a particular race equally, but an imbalance could result if coverage is withheld to maintain quality standards.
